For Macintosh computers running System 7.1, follow the instructions below.
1. Insert Disk Tools disk, Install Me first CD, or some media other than the boot volume.
2. Boot (start up) the computer from the Disk Tools disk, Install Me First CD, or any bootable disk other than the disk which you intend to install the software (target disk).
3. Run Disk First Aid on the target disk.
4. Update the target disk SCSI drivers with Apple HD SC Setup.
5. “Debless” the target disk’s existing System Folder by removing the Finder and System files from the folder. Drag the System file onto the desktop. Drag the Finder file into the trash.
6. Manually rename the existing System Folder to something else (such as Previous System Folder). Do not trash any files (except the Finder), because the old System folder may contain fonts, extensions, etc., that the customer will want to transfer to the new System Folder later.
7. Verify that you have removed all System Folders from the target disk by restarting the computer and waiting for the flashing “?” . This ensures that no duplicate System Folders exist on the customer’s drive. If there are, the computer will start up from one of them and will need to be removed also.
8. Start up the computer from the appropriate Install or Install Me First disk or CD.
9. Run the Installer
Now that you have created a clean new System Folder, do not add any files to it until you verify that the original problem (the reason behind the clean install) is no longer occurring.
Drag Copying the “System Folder” on the Disk Tools Disk
Booting from the Disk Tools disk is an acceptable method to quickly isolate a problem, but that does not mean that the System Folder on the Disk Tools disk can be drag-copied to a Macintosh computer and used for normal operation of the computer or considered a clean install. NEVER drag-copy the Sytem Folder from any System 7 Disk Tools disk except under very extreme circumstances where there is absoulutely no alternative. The System Folders on these disks have been specially minimized, with many important resources deleted. These System Folders are not reliable for doing anything except running the utilities on the Disk Tool disk ( Disk First Aid and Apple HD SC Setup).
Note: Only drag copy software off the Disk Tools disk with System 7 Pro. This version of the OS does not include many of the enablers required by our newer CPUs. Therefore a Clean Install with 7 Pro is not possible with these CPUs. If a Clean Install needs to be done with System 7 Pro on one of these CPUs, we advise drag-copying the System Folder from the Disk Tools disk that came with the Macintosh, then using this System Folder to boot from the HD, and then perform an install of System 7 Pro. ResCompare indicates that this system file is complete compared to a full 7.1 install from the CPU’s disk that was updated with System 7 Pro, so we do not expect problems with this procedure. However this should only be done as a last resort. The officially tested and supported procedure would be to clean install 7.1 using the disks or CD that came with the Macintosh and then update that to System 7 Pro.
